Yes, I’m having to curb time on duolingo.

It’s got me thinking about that learning stuff thing. Remembering this comic about learning being like riding a bicycle… that has lots of dowhill FUN FUN EASY parts between the challenges, compared to … *always being pushed.*

*Why can’t we build a math program like duolingo?* Aspects of it, as a Not Expert Designer But I’m Noticing These Things: there’s a ton of practice built in but I get to decide how much to do. I need to get *to level 1* in order to move on. Since I did take 5 years of Spanish grads 7-11, I totally remember at least 100 words and phrases … and things like “Yo tengo dos libros” and “yo no se donde esta mis llaves” … okay, that one’s not in Duolingo but I say it often…

… and I notice I’m much more likely to make a mistake I wouldn’t have (writing “siente” instead of “se siente”) if… I’m also trying to remember if bien is the right word for “well” in “feeling well.” Cognitive load, people…

The stories make me smile, too. A lady talks to a taxi driver; she’s going to Madrid for her honeymoon but … something’s not right… she says she is going herself… the driver asks about her husband and she says no… it’s her wife and she doesn’t want to go to Madrid but as they pull to the airport the wife is running towards her, says she loves her, and all is well. The stories all have a bit of a twist 😉 — but I also don’t have to read them if I don’t want to.

We could *do* that with math. Imagine the stories where somebody had to figure something out. Imagine having good visual cues at the beginning — new vocab always has an image. Imagine … there’s lots of the equivalent of different representations… and review…

Now, they did pick about 20 words that they repeat ad nauseam … cansado (tired)…

I also tried a few lessons in Korean. That’s. Hard. BUT it seemed I was better the second day. Matching the alphabet to sounds … I’m trying to figure out a cognitive strategy. BUT I get more experience points for each of those lessons, too! (Somehow I didn’t expect them to be added… ) … erm, yes, I’m at the top of my “leaderboard” by a hundred points or so.

The whole onboarding thing… piling on success and rah-rahs at the beginning… how can we do that?

And now, back to my irregularly unscheduled programming…

Except I did another lesson and noticed that … intentionally or not, or somewhere in between… I just got a thing right because they tend to capitalize the word thatwill go at the beginning of the sentence. I think that’s part of gaming culture… I *will* sign off but … so many badges to earn!!! That too…. and they’re much better than oh, Khan Academy. Different levels… I’m almost at level 7 of “sharpshooter” b/c I have lessons with no mistakes. (Oh, but oy! I am not a morning person, still. It doesnt’ happen in the morning.) Apparently there’s a badge for doing lessons really early or late, too… but that’s an incentive for me to go back and do easy lessons (that I just did “first level” on and then moved on — the higher levels aren’t *that* much harder…)
