Online courses, ugh!

Posted on August 30, 2017

Well, online courses that use Connect, anyway.

Student came in for help navigating music course.   We managed to figure out how to get to the text and the specific sections — not intuitive.

If you so much as blinked at the thing — or did anything else at all — you had the privilege of having to go through the entire login process again.   I’m sure it’s so it’s harder to copy or steal the content…

OER! OER! OER!   If they’re Open Educational Resources, we don’t need those machinations.   They’re open 🙂

In the meantime, this student is not enamored of online courses.   Sometimes people come in and hey, it’s a matter of figuring out the sensible navigation.   Nope, this is a “well, we have to do it ’cause they canceled the face to face section, but it confirms our belief that this is not a good way to learn.”

On the other hand — Kurzweil Firefly behaved rather nicely and handled an epub grandly.

And … openupresources   has its 6-8 curriculum “out there” and open and people are talking about integrating Desmos into it.   So… putting another pot on the fire….
