My rule of life is never to assume students “get it.”

That said, when I read blogs where teachers are perturbed that only some of their students developed some idea … but all discussed it, etc.   I think about puzzles that I’ve wrangled with and not seen the solution — and then seen the solution and been able to “get it.”   (I don’t mean I saw “the answer,” I mean I saw how it was solved.)

I don’t know how important the wrangling is — I think that depends on how much cognitive dissonance is involved.
