authentic puzzles

Whereas I acknowledge the goodness of “authenticity,” and “real world” problems… it is a human thing to enjoy solving puzzles.  THere’s an *authentic* pleasure in it.

Which is to say — sometimes it’s just fun to play around with something that is not career related, not “I have to know this to get through the day.”   Are we making sociological assumptions when we say our lessons need to be “relevant?”  Can’t they just enjoy a puzzle?
