So I was really happy with how my overall patience had been going until one of my anxious souls came in and dang it, my voice went right into that which manifests “you’re just being anxious! Can’t you just cut that out???” nonverbal message which, by the way, is profoundly ineffective.
What helps? Remembering to have student write each step, each tiny step (x/x is 1… that’s right — now, can you write that underneath?) because working memory is nonexistent.
I don’t know if I should have pushed harder to get a positive statement (I also know that having students recognize what they’ve done that’s good helps)… I got, “it’s over!” which is still far too external for my liking (“I got done!” is better…) but I’m not a good judge of when pushing means things crack (and I have a really low tolerance for “just say it even if you don’t mean it…”)
