This wasn’t the first time I’d seen this, though it’s not common:   figuring out areas of rectangles… a 6  by 4.

The student wrote out the problem as a multiplication problem and with what would otherwise look like automaticity if it were a longer problem, wrote “24” underneath it.  (Now, it occurs to me that he *might* have thought he “needed to show all work,” and I’ll find out…)
