I’m not sure students would see the connection between that and means in the context of real situations but that could be addressed.
A tweeet in the MTBoS (Math Twitter Blog-o-Sphere, I think) says when asked that no, secondary math teachers don’t think they need to learn about pedagogy (tho’ obviously that’s not universal – they’re out there in the MTBoS :)) Still… that would help explain popularity of online videos… and is something to ponder…

I occasionally used to get a few students to stand in line and ask about average height. Any mystery was solved when I suggested that we chop a bit off this one and add it to that one, repeating until they were all the same height – voila ! the average.
